Yes they would. So we just get all the traffic police and wardens to hang around traffic lights then? And what exactly would that achieve assuming we did? We would catch more of those driving without a licence granted.

But the much bigger number of drivers who are fully licenced but still drive like maniacs would be able to speed, pull handbrake turns and cause general mayhem to their hearts content because all the traffic police are checking licences at the traffic lights!

I am still not clear how you or Terry think displaying a licence would improve driving behaviour.

They lost me at that last roundabout. If as you say the license can be seen what exactly is the point, who is looking at it and why?. If a reckless driver came hurtling past you at over 50 MPH, okay you have established the make colour and model of the vehicle, he has the correct certification clearly visable on his wind screen, he is not wearing a seat belt, did you see if he came out of the pub on the corner, how many did he have when in there and did you manage to get his car registation no as he hurtled past. Of course they can't!

Try looking at the passenger side of any School of Motoring car that you see approacing you.
Very clearly you will be able to see the instructors ADI licence (it's a green square) and a tax disc (it's round).
If you can't see them then I suggest you consult an optition before continuing to drive!

Are you seriously suggesting you can read the info on these pieces of paper on any car that is approaching you. They could put any old piece of paper in the window as long as it is the right colour. If you can really read dates, reg nos etc under the circumstances you describe you must have better vision than the Hubble telescope.

As for the police all they need is a licence plate and they can find out a lot of information from that.

At no time did I use the word `read`.
What I am saying is that a licence displayed in the windscreen would be clearly visible from a distance, even on a moving vehicle.
What I would suggest is that licences be colour coded to denote whether the driver is a provisional licence holder, newly qualified, or an experienced driver.
Then any regulations pertaining to particular licence holders could be enforced
An example could be `a newly qualified driver would display perhaps a pink licence` and would not be allowed to carry more than 2 passengers or operate a vehicle with restricted power.
