The sweet shop at the end of Carmel Street opposite the arcade was called Howells in the 60's and Hughes florist was next door advancing up Commercial Street.

Hi, stoob,
Yes, I bought some flowers in Eileen Jenkins shop when last in Aber - to take to Christine Tidey's mother's grave in Cwmtillery.
Interesting about Ann Summers!
By the way, I gather Sommerfield became the Co-Op but that that has also closed. Can this be true?
And how many years is it since the Cottonwood cafe closed? I think Mary Ann told me that a lady from the Cwmtillery branch of the Cavaciutis used to own it.

Anthony

Somerfield is now called The Original Factory Shop and right opposite is Raffles Amusements which has a lovely facade.
The Molina's are related to the Cavacuiti's and Jean currently lives there and Jacks returning from Italy this week apparently for good.
Use to go in there for a steam pie and a game on the pinball.
Take care

Yes, I liked going into the Cottonwood. Used to love their steaming mugs of horlicks, sometimes when waiting for the Jones' Bus to Ebbw Vale in the winter. As long as the driver was also in there having a cuppa, you knew you wouldn't miss the bus!! Perhaps it closed because the bus stop to EV changed position so it had less customers?
Another shop I liked was Ash's in the Arcade. I still have a lovely Wade china tortoise which I bought there with pocket money about 50 years ago. It sits on a side table in my sitting room and reminds me of Abertillery every time I look at it.

No, Bryan!
Used to walk to town from Richmond Road. Sometimes as a treat I was allowed to go on the old Colliers Bus which used to run up and down Bryngwyn Road and over to Windsor Road. Stopped nearly outside our back gate which was on Bryngwyn Road. It was their old model with the pre-War "pointed" engine at the front. I can still remember the smell of the bus inside and the lovely high backed seats. I expect you can too.

Grey buses = Williams, I think!
Red I don't know, other than Red & White.
Or were you thinking of a red & grey (combined) one!
We'd better get back to the shops, otherwise Martyn will accuse us of being "off topic"!
By the way, another one gone - the little post office at bottom of Cwm Cottage Road.  When did that one close? Another loss.

Six Bells Post office on the corner of Princess St and Cwm Cottage Rd only closed fairly recently - within the last couple of years anyway.

I think three years at least, Martyn, because I recall seeing it closed in 2009 when I wanted a couple of stamps for post cards.
But, surely, that wasn't Six Bells Post Office? That is down in Six Bells in the lower tier of shops, and isn't that one still open? I say the lower tier: it used to be next to Amy Gayley's haberdashery (Amy was Christine's aunt, a really lopvely lady). Then I think it moved up to where Mr Flook used to be - not his old shop, but near there. Correct me if I am wrong. And I assume Rosser's Six Bells butcher, just by the lane leading down to the station, has gone too. That was run by one of Uncle Edmund Rosser's three sons. I should remember his name as we are second cousins, but it escapes me! Oh, I know! Terence. His older brother was a doctor (GP) in London - retired now. I forget what the third Rosser boy did. They came to my father's funeral which was decent of them.
Must have been a bit of a local scandal for poor Terence when Uncle Edmund committed suicide. Very sad affair.

The post office you are referring to is certainly still there and it is probably Six Bells Post Office. Not sure what the other one was called? I'm surprised it closed so long ago but I wouldn't like to argue the point  Smile
