One wonders if that fire were deliberate................
Let's hope not.
I wonder the old Saint John's, Six Bells didn't go up in flames because there were parafin stoves up the aisle during the winter to heat it, and a lot of it was wood. Plus all the many candles in an Anglo-Catholic church!!! Thank God it never did.

Glandwr Baptist Chapel picture in 1908.
The Phillips family were the main benefactors and the chapel opened in 1838 with the Reverend John Davies of Llandysul the first pastor.

Allegedly another arson attack, burnt down in 2007.
If you use youtube the 1971 Whitsun Walks are on there, just under 4 minutes in duration.

I enjoyed hearing Mrs Lewis very much, so thank you for the link. Did she die soon after that?

She was 103 when she died believe it was 2010.
Believe she was the only woman up at Brynithel Cemetery after the Six Bells Colliery Explosion.
Her  husband Lewis was headmaster at Tyr Graig, died 1977.
She went to college with Basil Rathbone's wife, cannot recall her name.
There's videos of her funeral service on youtube, could upload them but I'll pass on those.

Situated on the West Bank in Cwmtillery is the original Primitive Methodist Chapel pictured here in 1912.
In 1905 the two buildings were found to be moving away from one another due to mining subsidence. The chapel was closed and abandoned in 1910, hence the windows and roof damage.
Members managed to raise sufficient funds to open a new building in 1913 but it closed it's doors for a final time in July 1971.

I have seen this picture before and still can't get my head around it. I know the chapel was repositioned when it was rebuilt but it still confuses me.  I lived in West Bank and would like as many pounds as the number of times I walked  under that bridge on the way to  and from Blaentillery School .

Over 100 years ago Mary, the ledgers, membership books etc are all over the archive centre. They rented the new building off of the colliery owners, ten shillings a week.

Well this is my first message on this forum and having been away from Abertillery for over thirty years it will be interesting to see what  happens and if there is anyone using this that I might know
I thought the photos of Aberbeeg church were amazing and I must say , they make me want to pay a visit home again in the near future.
I was so suprised to see the photograph of the  Abertillery Oerpheus choir in Rome the trip was in 1982- I know because I was lucky enough to have sung with the choir at the time.
Martin Budd was also my music teacher so its a very special photo
great to see it and it inspired me to join this forum
