My first post regarding a Abertillery/Risca connection to Sheffield from around the first decade of the 20C.
It would appear that my mothers lineage through her mothers father's side originated in Abertillery. The family name is Roberts.
William Roberts d.o.b. 1864 (Abertillery) and his wife Sarah Jane Roberts d.o.b. 1866 (Dudley) had eight children and their names, year of birth and place of birth were as follows: Edgar Roberts 1887 Abertillery, William Henry Roberts 1888 Risca, Sarah Ann Roberts 1890 Abertillery, Enoch Roberts 1892 Abertillery, Ephram Roberts 1896 Abertillery, Margaret Roberts 1897 Abertillery, Barbara Roberts 1906 Abertillery and Thomas Roberts 1909 Abertillery. According to the 1911 census the family lived at 42 Blaenau Gwent, would this be Blaenau Gwent Rows today? I take it there would have been terraced rows here in 1911 and not bungalows?
William H Roberts moved to Sheffield and married Sheffield girl Ruth Osborne in Sheffield in 1912. They had two daughters, Ruth (1912) and Minnie (1917). William H Roberts enlisted in the military in 1915 at the age of 27 and was discharged in 1918 due to bronchitis.
William H Roberts was my great grandfather on my mothers side. Minnie was my grandmother and she passed away in 1960 aged 43.
My friend and I are unable to trace any further the life events of William H Roberts and have hit the wall so to speak. What I have been able to glean is Minnie registered her two children Roberts (Martin 1941 and Patricia 1942) and their father is not named on either of their birth certificates so retained their mothers family name.
Any pointers (if known) regarding the life of William Henry Roberts from Abertillery would be great?
