Good Afternoon,

I'd like to find out more about a fellow called Sydney James (born 1890s) and who I think may be his daughter Menai James, who was possibly a teacher at RoseHayworth? Apologies, I have very little information but I think Sydney James who lived in the village would have been my great grandfather.

Any links would be greatly appreciated.

Nicola

There was a Sydney James living in Abertillery in 1911 but he was only 9 years of age and was born in Blaina.
Should be somebody on here with a subscription to Ancestry or Findmypast.

Thanks, I have an ancestry account but I don't know enough about Sydney James/ Menai James to identify them, he supposedly had more children out of wedlock so it's all a bit of a mystery.

If Menai James was a teacher maybe somebody on the Abertillery Past facebook site can help out, there's over 5,000 members on there.

Menna - you may be right about her name but that's how I thought it was spelled - was definitely a teacher at Roseheyworth. She taught me English for three years. She had a reputation as a bit of a dragon and it is true she was pretty strict. But she was an excellent teacher and we were streets ahead of the children from local schools when we moved up to the Senior school at Nantyglo.

By the way, my English teacher at Nantyglo died during the school term and we had a temporary teacher who I understand was Menna's brother. I don't know his first name though.

This was early 70s NicolaJane and I'd put her age mid 50s (it's hard to tell when you're so young) so that sounds right.

ps Stoob mentioned Facebook. As well as the Abertillery Past group, there is also a Roseheyworth School group and  a British School Abertillery Remembered group - she didn't teach at that school but a lot of her pupils attended it .

There are definitely people on there who will remember Miss James, probably a lot better than I do. I have a vague recollection of a photo she may have been on too? As I said, although I liked her a lot not everyone did and so not all comments might be favourable!

A few friends have confirmed it was Menai and not Menna as i had thought. She was always "Miss" in school anyway.  Very Happy
