I hope someone can help; I'm trying to find when exactly Abertillery rugby club played a Cliff Morgan Select XV; I believe it was about 1957.    I would appreciate any details.

Thanks in advance

Had this of the WRU, let you know if there's a further reply.

I will have a look, though not much hope finding it.
Cliff played so many of those games that the WRU banned him from them.
I remember he used to come to Bridgwater (my mother was from there) every year.
The WRU said Cardiff and Cliff were playing too much.
Next year the same players came in Cardiff jerseys as Hubert Johnson's XV.
The public loved those games - the WRU hated them.
I have pics of Cliff in many of those, usually with Rex Willis partnering him, but
dont remember Abertillery. If he did, Haydn Morgan would have been there
as they got on well.
Cliff retired after the Babaas tour to South Africa in the summer of 1958.

No, no record of it, but Playfair Annual was poor on Welsh clubs in 1957-58 season.
My guess is that it was played in late April 1958, probably to coincide with
Abertillery's 75th season.

Hi Stoob; I've attached a snippett (sadly no date) but it may help.  I am trying to determine when Billy Thomas was called up for national service and thought maybe the game with Cliff Morgan's team would be easily remembered.  You will note it was played on a Wednesday and following in the report is listed the Easter fixture with Nuneaton; I wonder would that game ring any bells.

Believe they lost to Nuneaton at the end of one season, cost them an unofficial championship.
I'll ask John Lewis, he was in the squad for the next fixture.
Note Ken Jones scored for Cliff's side, regularly ran in the annual Police Sports and he played in the fixture up Cwmtillery to open the Woodland.
Is Bill still with us ?

The match was played in 1957 and covered in the South Wales Gazette dated 19 April 1957.
Cliff's team turned up with 14 players so Abertillery loaned them David Pask; - Cliff's team included Jeff Butterfield (England), Tony O'Reilly (Ireland), and Ray Prosser (Wales).
Cliff's team won by 17 points to 9.

Billy Thomas was a training instructor with the South Wales Borderers, believe he was in the army at the same time as Peter Richardson.
Capped twice by Wales both away against France in 1961 & 1963
Alun Pask also made his Welsh debut in the former game.

In September 1961 Ballymena made a short tour and took in games against London Irish on the 9th and Abertillery on the 11th. In the latter game which Ballymena won by sixteen points to six, John Lewis broke a leg for a third time and there were concerns he might not have played again. The Ballymena side included Syd Miller, Willie John McBride and Maurice Crabbe and when Abertillery played at Newbridge on 13 September the latter two both played for Abertillery, the match was lost by eight points to five.
Ballymena toured again September 1966 but Abertillery won this fixture by five points to nil.
