THIS month Abertillery will see a series of events put together to help our heroes in the military, including an amazing eight hour grappling marathon.

Councillor Mark Edwards has joined in the Help For Heroes campaign which raises money for wounded troops, and will be playing a show with his band High Spirits as well as collecting money at Abertillery Tesco.

After appealing for anyone with ideas to get involved through internet site Facebook, Coun Edwards was contacted by Greg Creel, of Brynithel who said he had an idea of his own for raising some cash.

Coun Edwards said: “We’ve got friends in the forces in Afghanistan and Iraq so it’s a cause close to our hearts.

“The slogan for Help for Heroes is ‘What are you going to do?’ so I asked for anyone with ideas to get in touch.

“I had barely pressed enter on the keyboard when Greg came back and said I’ve got a fabulous idea for it.”

Greg, aged 24, told Coun Edwards that he intended to endure a sponsored gruelling martial arts session, fighting opponents for eight hours straight.

The feat of grappling for six hours has previously been achieved in Swansea, but even the news of how tough this was didn’t put off Greg.

He said: “I was told it was really, really hard. I thought it was a challenge and it will be for a good cause.”

Greg, of Celtic Pride Martial Arts, Abertillery will be fighting for the entire time, fending off opponents with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, he knows it will be an incredibly challenging endeavour but is relishing the chance to do something for charity.

He said: “There’s a lot of guys my age who joined the army out of school and I admire the guts and determination they have, it’s a good cause to get involved with.”

On Saturday, June 6, Coun Edwards will be collecting at Abertillery Tesco, between 10am and 5pm.

On Saturday, June 20, Greg Creel will be undertaking his sponsored grappling session at Celtic Pride Martial Arts, Victor Road Abertillery.

On Saturday, June 27, High Spirits community group will be playing at the Doll’s House, Abertillery, along with David Grace and comedy group The Mimics. Tickets are £5.
