MEET the new management team at Llanhilleth Institute who want to open the doors of the building to you.

Neal Elstone has taken over as manager and Steven Evans-Jones has started as an involvement officer and they are looking for your help to improve the institute.

Des Cooper continues working in the role of administrator.

Mr Elstone, 42, is from Blackwood and was born into a mining family – his father was even chair of the extremely successful Blackwood Miners’ Institute.

“I am treating the institute as a business but also as a community opportunity,” said Mr Elstone, who started at the institute after working for almost 20 years with Woolworths where he left as an area manager for west Wales.

“My aim is to get the community using this building and making the most of everything it offers. There is massive potential here, they have excellent facilities for anything from weddings to concerts and conferences.

“We are going to start by organising events to run through the summer because we want to get people used to coming to the building and using it as a community facility.

“I’m operating a complete open door policy here, traditionally they have used a buzzer system but I wanted to get rid of that to encourgae people to come in, chat to us and tell us what they want from the centre.

“I would ask anyone to come in and see me, I want to talk to anyone who is interested in talking about the history of this building and more importantly its future because it has a massive future.”

Mr Evans-Jones started at the institute last week after working in the Rhymney Valley for years.

“My role will be coordinating volunteers and managing community development initiatives,” he said.

“I have worked in the voluntary sector in Rhymney and this community has similar needs. I would like to invite everybody from this community and the neighbouring areas to call in and have a look around the institute, I am hopefully going to recruit some volunteers.”

If you would like to contact the team at Llanhilleth Institute, call 01495 355996.
