I heard this week that for the first time in 40 years there will be no fireworks display at Abertillery park. Apparently they havnt enough funds to put it on and not enough people go and support it each year so they dont make their money back.
I have to admit I'm one of those who can watch it for free from their house but I was planning on going to the park this year. I guess I've left it too late to put my money where my mouth is  |

| It is a pity that there will be no display this year, but it has not been the same over the last couple of years. It was really spoiled by the idiots who caused trouble there a few years ago. |

I am not in favour of a Nanny State however trick or treating should be limited to friends or relatives homes the local lowlife seem to think it gives them licence to terrorise the elderly etc another aspect is young children going unacompanied to strangers homes I've said Trick to several of them and they've had no clue what to do Fireworks if your that desparate to explode some I think you should need a permit from the council to enable you to buy them with limitations on when they can be used Come on BGBC be the first to make these bye-laws

Are you alright or what ?!!!
There's now laws in this country that govern when a) fireworks can be used; and b) when they can be sold.
This year I think it's Oct 15th to Nov 5th.
Why would the Council need to (apply to) make a bye law ?

My heart goes out to The Lions/Round Table.
They've put on a good show and raised money for good causes yet those who freeloaded have caused the income to drop below sustainable levels.
No offence intended msd but this is the problem.
Consider this - had it been put on this year with all profits going to,say, Help for Heroes, how very successful would it have been ?
Now consider this - every year the beneficiaries have been good causes that are near and dear to the hearts of a lot of us.
And finally consider this - how would you feel if a good cause near and dear to you lost out on a few quid more because you decided to watch from 'the Golden Mile', or the kids snook in through the bushes ?
We're all to blame ( I've just remembered that I promised money and haven't yet done it - so sorry, but it will now be sorted ).
Let's make a promise to ourselves that we'll back a display next year and express it to those who organise, so they can have the confidence to do so.

I remember reading in the gazette last year that The Round Table were losing money as the display was so expensive with not enough support from the community and that was why I had decided to go along this year. I am personally a little frightened of fireworks  but my children enjoy them so I was going to take them along. I would be happy to show my support to the The lions and The Round Table if they were to put on a show next year.  |

Rocke The 2003 Fireworks Act states that fireworks can be purchased all year round from licenced shops This suggests to me that they can therefor be used all year round I'll keep a diary on when they are used here after November 5th

I was surprised to learn that it is legal to sell fireworks all year around. However, it is illegal to us them except for the period leading up to Bonfire Night and on New Year's Eve. Not that that stops anyone of course.

I think they are legal to purchase all year round... With our multi-cultural society [sic] there are many celebrations of one kind or another that require the use of fireworks !!

Fair point although I thought it was only Bonfire night and New Year which were allowed.

Assuming this web site is correct, there's been a bit of truth in most posts, and most of us have gots bits wrong too 
Generally shops can only sell fireworks leading up to Bonfire night, New Year, Chinese New Year and Diwali. There is a permanent curfew on letting them off between 11pm and 7am but it the start of the curfew is postponed for an hour or two during the above celebrations.
Having said all that, I suspect this particular law is only enforced on rare occasions.

Thanks msd, because of course no offence was intended.
I'll answer most of the other comments as well.
The 2003 Act has been tweaked so that Fireworks can only be sold between 15th October ( this year ) and some time in Nov.
It is intended to prevent nuisance due to fireworks at other times of the year. ( I think Tesco has a notice saying when it is legal for it to sell fireworks ).
In Aber the Round Table's Display was an opportunity for families to get together without the exorbitant cost and have a nice few hours together. All the profit went to somewhere decent. We as a community have let them down - and me more than you that read this because I've got so behind that they haven't as yet received a grant that would have helped.
We in The Valleys pride ourselves on 'Hwyl' yet an awful lot of us haven't helped this year.
How about we declare our support NOW for next year, to give a clear signal that we want to support those that support worthy causes ?

We as organisers (Abertillery Round Table & Abertillery Rotary Club) have organised the display at the park as a public service - to provide a safe environment for the family to have an enjoyable evening watching a spectacular display with all the profits made being given back into the community. Abertillerys display always set more firworks than any other display in the valleys - including Newport.
However - since the problems a few years ago when just a minority of youths were hellbent on ruining the evening for everyone our health and safety costs have risen and the numbers attending the displays at the park have halved and the numbers having a free view from the surrounding areas has doubled.
We have tried to reduced the costs. We changed to format of the displays to try and accommodate the public complaints by having a continuous display - numerous people complained about having to hang around during the interval.
tyhis year we have had to bite the bullet and cancel because we just haven't enough funds to go head - Many people promised suppoirt - finance but niether ever materialised. If we could guarantee the support we need there could be a display next year - its up to you, people of Abertillery |
