In the 80's my uncle Harry was the landlord there before he retired to Somerset.
When I was a nipper I used to walk up over the mountain to see the 'walking crane' I dont know if it still exists. Then we would stop for pop at the pub and come home via the cemetary and down the hill to Browns Corner.
What year was High Chaperal on...I remember watching it in colour. Maybe we had moved into the Mill by then. |
I remember the Church / Pub very well
When I was young I used to go there and play in the grave yard, While my parents used to go into the pub.
I don't know what it is like these days, but a lot of the main stones were
either loose or half off the tops of the graves.
I used to watch the walking crains Euclids in the opencast areas

St Illtyds church
Interesting article I read somewhere a young boy from aberbeeg back in about 18 dot dot was hit by a train and the local doctor amputated his leg in his home on the kitchen table (sounds gruesome I know)
The interesting fact is that his leg was buried in the local cemetery and the boy survived the operation and lived on however when he died he was buried in St Illtys so he was the only person in South Wales to actually have two grave stones how true this is I don’t know but I do remember reading about it
I also remember the walking Crain on the top of the mountain I could see it from my bed room in Griffing street my father would take me up for a walk we would go up the road from browns corner toward the cemetery but when we got half way we would take a foot path and follow a stream till we came out at the back wall of the church
High Chaperal well I was working in the pit at six bells on the night shift I was 16 so we must be talking 1965 aprox sometimes we would have a few pints in the Coach and Horses before going to work

What was the name of the hardware shop on Alexandra Road? I remember the smell of Esso Blue and putty that emanated from the cellar door on the left of the shop!
I would love to go back one day and see if I can still slide down the hand rail on the Doctors Steps!! |
