The Vivian Colliery was sunk by Powells Tillery Steam Coal Company in 1889 and at least 3 men lost their lives before the first coal was brought to the surface in 1891.
At the inquest of Tom Moseley in November 1903 it stated that he was the 43rd miner to die from roof falls alone that year.
From a list dated 1923 there were 889 employees at the mine.
In 1954/55 the colliery was included in a report listing the worst 42 in Wales for accidents.
The colliery ceased production in 1958.
